CD Review "The Awakening" by Mark Barnes by Reviewer - Len Rogers
Mark Barnes' newest release, "The Awakening" aptly falls into the genre of new age. In this case, new age is yes the genre, however it is also a great description of the CD. Unique, fresh, and in some ways almost a "mystical" experience, "The Awakening" not only pleases and tantalizes the auditory sense, the work also is literally an awakening. We have known for many years that "music calms the savage beast", so to speak. But Barnes has taken that calm and transfigured it into an inspirational sensory experience. A generous offering of fourteen tracks, "The Awakening" is more than what is in your CD player today. The music lingers within, a myriad of sensations ranging from serene to empowered are gifts the talents of Mark Barnes also delivers. This listener cannot merely offer a description of; new age, ambient electronica, or accomplished keyboardist. Although, all are true, there is so much more to this work. Once you pass the initial enjoyment of just listening, you enter the next phase, feeling. For me a very personal sensation of peace and focus. I have already heard from members that "The Awakening" will be an enhancing match for meditation and even music therapy. I have my "awakening" during my morning walk. Mark Barnes literally wraps you up in his music and carries you along for a most invigorating ride. The entire CD is an example of muse. That being Mark Barnes' muse, and an active muse for the listener. I was not able to pick a favorite track. As all are a part of the larger experience of the entire CD. Not to say each song is not "stand out" strong on their own, they are. But for me, I want the entire experience. I remember a "Peanuts" comic many years back. Lucy had asked Charlie Brown to describe his favorite emotion. Charlie's answer was: The feeling I get when I am laying in the back seat of my parents car, during a vacation drive. I can see the landscapes pass by, feel the road, but I know I am in the best place in the world. That is the way I describe the experience." The Awakening" is the car, and of course Mark Barnes is driving. Yes, I know sounds Oprah eh? Well I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the daytime feel good Miss herself putting the reaction to "The Awakening" up there with other life empowering arts she supports. Mark Barnes can count himself among the elite in the world of chillout or new age, whichever term you prefer. I suppose chillout is the more contemporary way of describing such music and that term certainly bears the brunt of much less disparagement. But regardless of what genre terminology over which fans want to split hairs, the relevant issue at hand is that Barnes is a champion of this realm of music. If you set out to concoct chillout such as this, one of the first adjectives to pop into the mind of a reviewer who’s heard one bad album too many and is chomping at the bit to chew the next CD he hears to bits is the word lush. Mind you, I’m not that reviewer; I’m just saying at any rate, the full force etherea that comes alive on The Awakening is a universe in itself. Tardis-like, that little CD holds much more than it appears to contain. For the music on that disc is so three-dimensional experientially it practically swells into an entire cosmos of its own. Within the confines of your own room, your own headphones, you can enter a new dimension where everything is floating. It’s like heaven without the religious zeal! A gorgeous bed of transcendent melody awaits you on each track, a floating, elongated warmth of musical comfort surrounding the spine of the music Barnes seductive caress on the keys of his piano. Gentle but not generic, soft but not weak, The Awakening is a true work of beauty and craftsmanship. This genre is one whose temptations include getting too repetitive or just being plain old derivative. To do this kind of atmosphere true justice, a little care, creativity and individuality has to surface somewhere. Thankfully, such is the case with Barnes latest effort. He’s overcome the pratfalls of this brand of electronic music and electronic music of any genre is not easy to do and do right and created a magical world of aural joys.
