CD RELEASE PARTY by Single Release Party Review
Walking into the upstairs ballroom at Hotel Louisville on November 30th, I can honestly say I did not know what to expect. Upon my arrival, I noticed that the crowd was still small, but steadily growing. The atmosphere was absolutely alive from the very beginning. The DJ’s, though virtually invisible the entire evening, did accomplish the most important task for a DJ to have. Superb song selection! Although, they could have tried harder to interact with the audience more, they still managed to get heads nodding and feet tapping, and even a few brave takers on the dance floor. There was an abrupt change of pace when the opening act began their set. Although to be fair, there wasn’t an easy way to smoothly transition to a group like Act II. It was a promising start to see the Motown trio all on stage in matching outfits in a very festive orange. The group performed classic songs such as “La La Means I Love You” and the crowd favorite, “My Girl”. I would have been more impressed had the group incorporated more choreography like the traditional groups of that particular era would have done. With the exception of “My Girl”, Act II did not quite inspire the audience to leave their seats for the very empty dance floor. A lot of this most likely was attributed to the straining vocal chords, not counting the lead singer Stefan who seemed to carry the group mostly. I am not sure if it was the age of the performers or the late hour, but there were some obvious struggles vocally. However, after all of my criticisms, I must commend Act II on fulfilling the main purpose of all entertainers. ENTERTAINMENT! As I scanned the faces of the audience during the performance I took notice of the smiles on nearly everyone’s face, including my own. So for that, I am grateful. The most unexpected surprise of the evening was the impromptu performances by a few audience members. The gentlemen of the room were well represented by soulful singing and impassioned monologues. Whether it was making us ladies blush or just simply compelling the audience to erupt in laughter, many faces were turning shades of red. When it was time for the headline act of the evening, you could feel the anticipation growing. Looking back on Kid Cos’s performance with Twiggins, two words come to mind. Passion and Perseverance. Even through obvious technical difficulties and muddled sounds, Kid Cos gave a passion filled performance that radiated sincerity. Even through all of the distractions that the lack luster sound system was creating, both Kid Cos and Twiggins powered through and brought people to their feet. They made great use of the stage area and Kid Cos did a wonderful job interacting with the audience. At times it appeared that he was rapping a conversation with the audience members, which I found to be entertaining and impressive. The soulful smooth vocals of Twiggins shined through all difficulties and brought Goosebumps along my arms, and I am pretty sure I am not the only one to feel that way. The featured single, “I’m the Truth” was very entertaining and was set up nicely to show the raw potential this record can be and has built anticipation for the upcoming album release of Labor of Love. My personal favorite performance of the night was “Let Me Do My Thing”. I could close my eyes and imagine this song just absolutely blasting on the radio. Even four days later, it is still running through my head like the hit I feel it can be. I cannot conclude this review without mentioning the hard work that the event’s coordinator Cheri “Lady Boss” Green put into the evening. She kept things going and lively and provided the feeling of welcome and encouragement to perform and do the things God has given you the talents to do. Lady Boss certainly knows how to motivate and encourage those who need it and she made everyone in the room feel like family.
