U.P. Rodeo Welcomes Luke Bryan & Tay Humphrey by
U.P. Rodeo to welcome Luke Bryan July 22, 2009 The Daily News Save | Bookmark and Share IRON RIVER - The 42nd annual U.P. Championship Rodeo will be kicking up its heels at the Iron County Fairgrounds with two performances planned for Saturday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m., and one performance on Sunday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. In addition to the buckin' broncos and bull-riding daredevils, this year's event will feature country singer-songwriter Luke Bryan. Bryan takes to the stage at the Rodeo grounds on Friday, July 31. Opening act is up and coming country performer Tay Humphrey. Bryan's new single, "Do I" is off his second Capitol Records Nashville album "Doin' My Thing," which is set to be released in early October. Even before Capitol Records Nashville released his debut single, "All My Friends Say," in early 2007, Bryan was already earning significant media attention. He was named one of Billboard magazine's new faces to watch in 2007. He was the only country music performer selected for the honor. Bryan was also included in Country Weekly's "Who's Hot in 2007" feature and the single was chosen as an iTunes "Discovery Download" of the week. He made his debut on the world famous Grand Ole Opry early last year, which he says was "truly a dream come true. I'll Stay Me," Bryan's debut album, is just country enough to represent Bryan's rural Georgia upbringing, but rocking enough to reflect the years he spent honing his live chops at bars and fraternity houses in his home state. Bryan found his voice as a writer by sticking close to the life experiences he knows best, as evidenced on such album cuts as "Country Man" and his signature song, "We Rode In Trucks," a favorite among his Georgia fans. Bryan wrote the three- week No. 1 song "Good Directions" for Billy Currington. Humphrey resides in Nashville, where he is pursuing his dreams as a country music artist. Originally from Murray, Utah and a former rodeo bull rider, Humphrey has traveled much of his teen years competing in the Western Circuit. He was featured in the April edition of "Country Weekly" in the "Listen Up" section where his song, "Burning Rubber in My Daddy's Shoes" is available as a free download. Concert tickets for Luke Bryan are $18 in advance and $25 at the gate. Ben Goeser Event- Today's Country by Artist Perform to Raise Money for KJ Murdered
Benefit shows come and go in Nashville all of the time, but some, like this particular one hit close to home on a whole different level. Ben Goeser and his wife Nikki were just two people full of love, not only for each other but also for life itself and those that surrounded them. Ben always wore a smile on his face and even when backed up against the wall somehow seemed to find a way to love others with all he had. He and Nikki ran a very successful karaoke company in Nashville that attracted everyone from Music Row PR and management reps, to artists, backup singers, etc… When in one night everything changed for Ben, Nikki, and countless others that were close friends with the couple. Ben was attacked and shot to death at a Nashville sports bar on Nolensville Road where they were prepared to host another fun night of laughs, drinks, and singing as they had done every Thursday night. A day after his death, Nikki had learned that the couple had no life insurance policy and those music row vets close to Ben and Nikki decided to give back with their talents and tribute him the best way that they could; through a benefit show that attracted a large audience of friends, strangers that had heard the story and been touched, industry, and everyday people that just wanted to help. The evening’s host, Andie Lynn of Nashville’s Big 98 FM, welcomed everyone to the show as photographs of Ben and his life revolved around the countless television screens throughout the venue. Though she didn’t know Ben personally on a friendship level like so many that had gathered did, she like many of the other people on hand were just touched by the story and wanted to do their part to help out. Though there was plenty of non-stop music to go around throughout the night, and that may have been what attracted some to Limelight, there was also a silent auction throughout the night that included prizes like autographed guitars from Dierks Bentley, Little Big Town, and Darius Rucker, as well as autographed merchandise from Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, and more. The first half of the night treated the crowd to a delightful dose of music from Nashville’s up and coming unsigned artists like Cody & Chance, Nashville Star finalist Casey Simpson, Jess & Alicia, Amy Bonner, Tay Humphrey, Megan Conner, and 2008’s Colgate Country Showdown winners Nashstreet. While the highlight of the evening came midway through the musical performances when Ben’s wife Nikki stepped up on stage to address the packed house. Surprisingly, she held back her emotions as she very calmly began to tell the story of her husband being murdered in front of her on that Thursday night. A huge ovation came over the crowd as Nikki brought Todd Cain onto the stage, as he is one of the two guys that she explained, “jumped on Ben’s shooter, and I believe saved my life.” She went on to invite the crowd into her personal life with Ben as she pulled out the last love note he had ever written to her, inside of a greeting card he gave her, which brought tears not only to Nikki’s eyes as she choked up reading it, but also to the crowd’s as they got a perfect glimpse into Ben’s heart and soul and who he was. As everyone was wiping off their eyes, Nikki brought things back to a much more laid back and fun level as she introduced the next band to the crowd. One of Ben’s personal favorites, The Winters Brothers took the stage next, and Nikki had the crowd laughing as she stated, “Dennis from the Winters Brothers came out to the funeral home for the wake and I said to Ben that night, you’re gonna crap your pants when you find out who is here to see you.” As the Winters Brothers brought the house down with their southern rocking’ style the crowd was then introduced to the very laid back Darryl Worley, who played his hits like “Awful Beautiful Life,” “Have You Forgotten,” etc… followed by RCA recording artist Chris Young who gave the crowd a taste of his new stuff with songs like current single “Getting’ You Home,” “Voices,” “Drinkin’ Me Lonely,” and more. He was joined midway through his set by Thom Shepherd, who led the crowd in a sing-a-long of the hit song “Redneck Yacht Club,” which he is a co-writer on. The entire evening went off without a hitch including the impromptu jam session of Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” and that last second addition Jerrod Niemann to the lineup that closed out the show. The entire crowd, from the industry folk to the performers all understood just why they were there to support the family and stayed throughout the entire night in support of the event. Nikki said it best in her speech midway through the show, “Ben was all about a party and a good time.” While I personally didn’t know Ben, from what I gathered from talking with those who did know him, this was his kind of party and his kind of fun. Competition at the rodeo improved last year when it joined forces with the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association for the first time. “Last year was the first year for us with the RMPRA and contestant-wise it was our biggest rodeo ever,” said Bit & Spur Rodeo chairman Jim Harrell. “There were 326 contestants last year and this year we have 360 entries.” This weekend will mark the 65th time the Tooele Bit & Spur Rodeo Club has sponsored a rodeo for the Fourth of July. The action will start each night at 8 p.m. at the Deseret Peak Complex, but on Friday night festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a pre-rodeo concert featuring Utah country singer Tay Humphrey. A donation by Rio Tinto has helped the Bit & Spur Club pay for Humphrey’s appearance plus pay for a big fireworks celebration at the conclusion of the rodeo on Saturday night. Competition during the rodeo itself should provide plenty of fireworks with several top cowboys already entered to show off their skills. One of the most successful cowboys will be Allen Bach who competes in team roping and tie-down roping. The 53-year-old Bach is a longtime rodeo champion from Texas who has been living in Heber City while offering classes on roping. Bach has career earnings of more than $1.8 million, is a four-time world champion heeler and has competed in the National Finals Rodeo 26 times. Other top competitors include RMPRA champion team ropers Greg Bennett and Justin Hodson. Also, 2009 roping champions Kelly Clements and Jake Freeland will be competing. Champion cowboys Jesse Loveless and Amy Roundy will compete along with 2009 RMPRA bareback champion Conner Kent. After the regular competition on Friday, there will be “slack” competition for any cowboys who want to compete but did not make it on the regular draw sheets. Stock will be provided by Broken Heart Rodeo Company. Harrell said an exciting event is planned during the intermissions at each night’s rodeo which should delight patrons. The event is called an Extreme Pony Express Race. Each team competing will include a horse handler, a tack carrier and a horse. Two teams at a time will compete out in the arena. At the given signal, the tack carrier runs to their handler holding the horse and both team members begin saddling and bridling the horse. The halter must be removed from the horse. Either person can be the rider who mounts the horse and rides around four barrels set up in the arena. Upon return to his team member, the horse is unsaddled, unbridled and the halter put back on the horse. When complete, one team member shall retrieve all the tack and the other team member will lead the horse and run to the finish line. Time stops when both team members, the horse and all the tack cross the finish line. Mutton bustin’ will be held on Saturday night at the rodeo.
