My friend Jeff Gellenthin recently recorded a new song called Looking For A Cure that has spoken to me like few songs do. The lyrical content of this song is so simple, yet it's message is one that should be shouted from mountaintops. I already knew that Jeff was a very talented musician/songwriter. His instrumental Inspiration is so soothing it just makes you want to sit back, close your eyes and relax. However, Looking For A Cure, shows that he is also talented lyrically.
Looking For A Cure is the song of my life. By the time I reached my mid twenties I truly had what many would call a happy life. I had a wonderful husband whom I loved and who loved me. I had four beautiful children who I was blessed to be able to stay at home and raise. I had a nice home, nice car, and food on my table. However, I still longed for something more. I wasn't happy and didn't even know why. I just knew that for years I seemed to always be on a search for something to make me happy – to fill that void I felt deep inside. I was looking for a cure and I found it in Jesus Christ. I found a depth of joy that I had never known.
Many people walk down that lonely road, yearning for something to fill a void in their lives. Unfortunately, many of us have looked in all the wrong places. Many others are still looking. It can't be found in the natural world. No amount of money, drugs, drinking, family members, friends, etc. will bring you that kind of joy. The cure can't be found in any material thing and while our family can bring us great joy and happiness, they are not the cure for this type of longing deep within. This cure can only be found in Jesus.
My life isn't perfect, I still go through rough times like everyone else. However, I have an eternal joy that goes beyond those rough roads of life. When things don't go smoothly in life, I know where the answer to my problems can be found! It doesn't matter what life throws at me, I know that I serve a God who is bigger than any problem I could possibly face.
I'd like to share the lyrics of Looking For A Cure with you. I believe the lyrics will speak to many others just as it did me. Perhaps you've found the cure and this is the song of your life too. If you haven't, I encourage you to think about it's message and I pray that you will one day be able to say, "That is the song of my life!"
Acts 2:28 "You have shown me the paths that lead to life, and your presence will fill me with joy."
Looking For A Cure
High on a mountain. A walk along a shore.
I don't know the reason. Just looking for a cure.
It's not in a bottle. Not in a pill.
Everything I've found, goes against my will.
Shed some light.
Show me the way to go.
I see an eagle soaring, way up in the sky.
There's only one reason I dream that I can fly.
In all my searching, I know one thing that is true.
Whatever my heart longs for, Lord it's only found in You.
Take my hand.
Let's find the way to go.
High on the mountain. A walk along the shore.
I figured out the reason. I looked hard for the cure.
It's not in a bottle. Not in a pill.
It's there for the taking, and now I've got my fill.
Tell the world
We've found the way to go.
