I related this song in the days of medevil times, when too the husbands traveled afar in their will of mission and times of war...History of either Scotland or Ireland...My favorite parts of this song is the harmonizing between the two singers as well as OLDER instruments; gondolo, violin, triangle, etc are in the music. This song would be a great piece for a screenplay: Historical Love stories...
Firmly in the folk tradition, both lyrically instrumentally and melodically, this is a pleasure to listen to, with traditional instruments supplemented by some real surprises (gamelan?), a strong tune and a superb lead and harmony vocal. I just love the cymbal swells, and have every intention of stealing the idea. The instrumental interlude is a bit of a surprise, since it sounds a little like a long lost fragment of a work by Debussy At the beginning, I liked it as a simple folk-derived song. Half way through, we are taken into a whole new world of musical delight Truly original, truly wonderful.
