Portrait of Cantoamerica

About Cantoamerica

San Pedro, Costa Rica

Founded in 1980, the band captures the sounds
of the Afro Costa Rican culture. Based on original songs written by Manuel Monestel, band leader, and Calysonian Walter Ferguson "Mr. Gavitt", Monestel´s mentor and personal friend. CANTOAMERICA has developed a peculiar sound that reflects diverse faces of today´s Costa Rica with a flavor that goes deep into the roots of the culture.
Such repertoire represents the indigenous cultures of the country by means of the rhythms, instruments and lyrics which sometimes are poems written by renowed Costa Rican poets. The songs in Spanish and Creole English represent the linguistic diversity of the country.
The band has made 12 records and 25 international tours to countries like Mexico, USA, Canada, Colombia, Puerto Rico,Guatemala,Panama Taiwan(Asia), Benin(Africa).
