About Free Speech

Long Beach, CA

Fighting off any ostensible comparisons, Free Speech comfortably rests at the cross-section of Big Pun, Talib Kweli, Mike Tyson and Stephen Hawkings. The refreshingly memorable Los Angeles wordsmith wraps provocative, poignant content in a standout h*ly shit flow atypical of anything in the public ear. With a hunger that resonates on every track, his musicprovides both colorful, sometimes laughable, commentary on the world we live in and thoughtful introspection. Oh, and you it'll most defintiely keep your headnodding for days. Free Speech's soulfully energetic delivery, candor, and distinguished lyrical arsenal sets the artist apart as an entirely new breed of emcee.

Unlike the conventional marketing campaigns that pay to make people like artists, Free Speech's ascension is entirely fan-driven. His global fanbase is organically grown, generated by a well-designed grassroots push and word-of-mouth fan endorsements. In early 2006, after giving his inaugural Calisthenix mixtape (available at a 4 out of 5 rating, OkayPlayer strongly urged hip-hop heads to permanently keep Free Speech on their radar. Failing to disappoint, just a few months later, he dropped his buzzworthy Laffy Taffy Rots Your Teeth album - a provocative project that took aim at the prevailing industry buffonery typified by D4L's "Laffy Taffy" song. Relying heavily on fan evangelism, the release eventually collected over 60,000 downloads and counting. Free Speech continued to gain momentum, releasing two camp compilations and multiple acclaimed music videos since

Free Speech touts collaborations with Tribeca, REKS, Tanya Morgan’s Ilyas and Median of the Justus League on his résumé, in addition to a 2007 remix project with Japanese producer Volta Masters for an exclusive Asia-only release. He has shared the stage with Beck, Dead Prez, Planet Asia, Ras Kass, and other notables. Currently, Free Speech is recording what promises to be an heavy-hitting, groundbreaking full-length with his new group Big in Japan - a project which he plans to specifically market and distribute in Japan. As an artist that continues to effortlessly widen the boundaries of lyricism, Free Speech quiets any "hip-hop is dead" harbingers with progressive, socially-inspired music infused with a "nostalgic" golden era vibe.
