The Summoned is an experimental death metal band from Boston, MA for fans of The Red Chord, Between The Buried and Me and The Black Dahlia Murder. Our music is the equivalent to being strapped to an unstoppable missile on it's way to destroying a distant planet.

About the Artist

Known for their intensity in both their music and live shows Boston based experimental death metal band The Summoned are being considered as fore-runners in the New England metal scene. They've been referred to such bands as Between The Buried and Me, The Faceless and The Red Chord but that doesn't stop them from experimenting with their sound but maintaining the intensity they're most known for. With Steve Thompson on Vocals, Josh Crocker and Shaun Murphy on Guitars, Justin Marchant on Bass, and Sam Hang on Drums The Summoned believes they have collectively brought out all their separate influences to create their own vision of experimental death metal.

Formed in the winter of 2007 in a span of just five years The Summoned has completed two east coast tours, a 23 day tour, a tour of Canada, played shows in fifteen+ states, released an EP, released a full length and has had the honor of opening for national acts such as Between The Buried and Me, Cannibal Corpse, The Faceless, Veil of Maya, Periphery, Job For A Cowboy, Dying Fetus, Beneath The Massacre, Ion Dissonance, Through The Eyes of the Dead, Carnifex, Overkill, Vader and more.

With the release of their highly anticipated full length "If Only Minds Could Paint Pictures" The Summoned truly believe this is their best work to date. Vocalist Steve Thompson proclaims "We wanted to truly create an album that is just unrelenting, an album that needs to be listened to from start to finish as opposed to song by song. We wanted to truly capture the feeling of our intense live shows and include it in "If Only Minds Could Paint Pictures" and we believe we've achieved that in this album."

With two east cost tours, an EP release, endorsements, opening for national acts, radio air play and a highly acclaimed full length under their belt The Summoned has proven that their hard work with song writing and live shows strike a nerve. Harvest" is the first EP released by The Summoned from Dracut MA. It's six face melting songs that don't let up until the very end. The right amount of spooky, epic and tech that brings this whole record together. The guitars remind me of that old classic sense of death metal thats so menacing and mean. Its not that played out breakdown crap that kids keep calling death metal these days. This record is fast, in your face and scary as hell. This brings me back to the old Death records my brother used to torture me with when I was a little kid because I was like 6 and Death was just way too heavy for me to even handle. I love how this record has barely any breakdowns in it. Metal is supposed to be fast as fuck and terrifying every mom within a 10 mile radius... and let me tell you... my mom is scared shitless. The drums are incredibly tight. So tight that I'm pretty sure their drummer is from the future and he traveled back in time to show all these kids how robots play drums on the moon. My favorite track on the record is "Encased". The intro to the song alone is bound to keep you tuned in for the onslaught of sounds the rest of this record brings to your ears. Deathcore gets a pretty bad rep in the metal community for whatever reason, but I like how an album like this can be so diverse with so many different sections and melodies and tempo changes.

If Only Minds Could Paint Pictures Review by Greg Mann
I know what most of you are thinking. Yes, I was the bassist of this band for quite some time, but I am going to assure you of something right now before starting this review: This band is awesome, but there are parts that I feel just weren't quite right and didn't make too much sense to me, which is why I am going to give you a 100% honest review. When The Summoned released Harvest (2008, DIY), it was an overall good death metal album with minor deathcore influence, steady structures, and a very obvious death influence. On If Only Minds Could Paint Pictures (2010, First to Fight), they nearly completely dropped the deathcore sound, stepped up their game, and wrote an album that is almost nonstop from start to finish, with very few breakdowns to split the songs up, which is something I can definitely appreciate in a band surrounded by the deathcore (metalcore, whatevercore) scene of New England. The album starts with a short track called "Quasars." These are galaxies in outer space which are said to be the most luminous objects in the universe, which could some up this band altogether in every aspect: Nerdy, and different. Right after, they break out into "Dreaming in 2D," making it known that you are in for one hell of a ride. When "Anatomy of a Barfight" kicks in, you know you are in for a different song from the rest, this reason being is that it's a lot more upbeat, and structurally different than the rest. The song ends with what I could only describe as what you would hear in an old Dysner mystery movie with a random surfing scene out of nowhere and a porno being filmed on shore, and the riff seems to go on for a bit longer than necessary, which kinda makes it feel like it's dragging a tad. They give you a small break in the middle with the incredibly atmospheric "Space Was..." but out of nowhere roll right into "Space Is..." The songs remain fast and heavy, until they pull into a different direction with "Voids." This is the song that I had always kinda joked about it being their "sing-a-long," but stopped joking about it when people would actually be singing along. This is clearly the slower, more melodic of the songs, but still keeping it intense in the middle to let you know they didn't feel like slowing it down too much. The album ends with "Teachers of a Modern Age" slowly fading out into a scene at the beach, with seagulls flying everywhere desperate to pick up that McDonalds french fry you just dropped. The lyrics are different. Vocalist Steve Thompson doesn't sing about hatred of religion, doomsday, or irony, but instead takes a route similar to Between the Buried and Me in which case he writes stories (concepts, if you will) about fucked up people in more fucked up situations. I mean, who else can you think of off the top of your head that ever thought to write anything (books, movies, or songs) about a man that turns into a goddamn planet? That's what I thought. Overall, The Summoned is one of those bands that's very hard to put into one specific genre. It's not quite death metal, not exactly grindcore, and not what many would consider deathcore, but instead a mixture of all of those, with slight jazz influence popping up every now and then. Definitely a very creative sound, which could either be the making point or breaking point of this band, but definitely nothing in between. However with this album being a completely different monster than the self released Harvest altogether, it shows that the band is still heading in a direction that could eventually lead them to the top of their class.
